This movie made me depressed, upset, angry, empathetic, distancing and on and on. Joaquin Phoenix was superb. His performance overshadowed everyone else in the film which is unfortunate in some respect because I plan overlooked everyone and watched with amazement the performance he gave. What a fantastic journey Arthur Fleck went through.
Yes I believe I recognized many of the angles of commentary watching and thinking about the movie afterwards. The strongest impression is how "super heroes" can be very polarizing and don't mean outcomes are always good. The other major impression was the lack of mental health assistance which we all know has had major impacts on society and even more so on the people who could be helped. This was a movie of name all the stereotypes and perceptions you can name. There are a lots.
The movie had one glaring drawbacks that I believe could have been dealt with without asking forbearance by the audience as it did. When Gary witnessed the bludgeoning of Randall (wow was that intense, the interaction of the three in the scene) and the subsequent cat and mouse with Gary how do you explain that he did not run to the nearest policeman he could find. What did he do, appears nothing. This is a loose end that is glaring. Another is the pillow scene in the hospital. The movie needs a better cause and effect when it came to killing.
Everything was layered when it came to mistreatment by Arthur but when Arthur was doing his thing it was action/cut move on and don't deal with the consequences. Perhaps we don't care about victims.
I give it an eight. Don't get me wrong it was a good movie but for me the loose ends keep blurring my view of the movie. Is this a character study or a warning about society? I guess both. Just a little sloppy on the story line.

I expected little with it being attached to DC.

I was wrong and wrong again. This the best 'origin story' movie I've ever seen. The movie did a good job of following his descent into madness and gave him sympathy.

Of course some folks will not like this but to me it makes the character complete. Total hate for the Joker would make him one dimensional and that would be typical DC. Hey Heather!
